Thank you for contacting me at the BACP website. You have requested counselling online via e-mails and chat sessions and I want to introduce myself in order to describe to you how I hope that we would work together.

About Me:

My name is Jharna and I am a Counsellor working on-line. I have previously worked in the field of Mental health providing face-to-face and telephone counselling with clients from various ethnicity, background and a wide range of presenting problems including drugs, alcohol, sexual abuse,self-harm, HIV, domestic violence and special needs. In the past 3-4 years, I have been a trainer and supervisor for Mental Health. I have a special interest in working with people in caring professions or those who find themselves “looking after” or “rescuing” others in their personal lives.

Background and Qualifications:

Born and brought up in India, I did my Master’s training graduating in 1997 from Connecticut (USA) and worked in India in the field of Mental Health facilitating groups and individual therapy. I also helped setting up and supervising the first telephone helpline service run by volunteers in New Delhi. Thereafter, I moved to UK and continued working mostly in the area of domestic violence since 2000. I have since also provided training and individual coaching to a wide range of professionals- social services, school teachers, police, doctors, nurses, counsellors, teachers about various topics involving work-related stress.

About Counselling:

The purpose of counselling is to enable you to find ways to address difficulties that you are having and to find ways forward that are satisfying for you. We achieve this through a process of communication. You have an opportunity to describe what is troubling you and I will respond. I will not be telling you what to do but I shall try to understand what you tell me. I may ask you questions and I may suggest alternate ways of thinking about what is happening, which you may choose to ignore or accept.  I hope that you will respond to what I have said as well as telling me more of what you are thinking and feeling. Also, some people may wish to share with me any personal journal, art, poem, and picture via email as a part of our therapeutic exchange.

Before you decide whether to start this process I would like to you to understand how counselling will take place. In agreeing to work together as counsellor and client we are agreeing to the terms set out. You will also need to fill out an application form and I can then provide you the possible dates when we could start. These will be sent by email unless you prefer by mail, which may take longer.
